Frequently Asked Questions and Information

What is the financial commitment to begin with a therapist?
Individual and couple's sessions are weekly, but if you need every other week because of scheduling/finances we can discuss the possibility to do a month of weekly and then switch to biweekly. There is a slight price increase for biweekly because it's much harder to find another biweekly person to offset the off weeks, but we can work with you on this. We have a set price for therapy with occasional low fee spots available. Once you are seeing someone, if something comes up (job transition/loss, unexpected life changes, etc.) you just need to let your therapist know and have a conversation with Emery to see about a temporary price change, so we can support you through whatever is happening in your life.

Price/Limited Low Fee Spots Available
Individual Sessions (50 min)- 225/175
Couples Sessions (75 min) - 325/250
Groups (60 min)- 45-75 (depends on the group)

How long does therapy take? How long will I be in therapy?
That is completely dependent on each person and individual circumstance. Some people are only in therapy a short period of time (3-6 months) while others choose to continue for years. Therapy can also be continuous or might go for a while and then have a break before picking back up again. We are here for you in whatever form that takes and can help you figure out what fits best for you. There is no long term commitment ever and you can stop any time you would like! All the therapists at Water & Stone fully support you doing what you need to and are open to talking about stopping or pausing any time you have questions or want to consider it.

Do I have to commit to a certain number of session?
No! In fact, legally and ethically, you are allowed to stop therapy any time you want to. We would love to know a couple sessions before you want to end so we can wrap things up and support you taking the step away from therapy, but sometimes it happens more quickly and we will support you through that ending as well.

Do you accept insurance?
We do not accept insurance. While I understand there are times you need to use insurance (and we fully support that!) as soon as insurance pays: they have a right to see your records any time they would like, you must have an official mental health diagnosis, and they have control over how long you may attend therapy. Again, we at Water & Stone, fully support using insurance and having a diagnosis when it helps someone access services and get more support. To help those access affordable healthcare, without using insurance, we run groups and can discuss temporary price breaks as needed. If you need to use insurance I highly suggest looking for a therapist through your insurance company or Zocdoc.com. If you need low fee individual therapy and want to pay privately (without insurance), a great resource is Openpathcollective.org

Do you have a sliding scale?
We have a set number of low fee spots available, so can work with you based on your needs and circumstances. If you don't feel you need a low fee spot, but the cost of our regular session is a bit out of reach, please be in touch with Emery to discuss what fits your budget.

What Forms of Payment Do You Accept?
Currently we accept credit cards (via IvyPay), Venmo, and Zelle.

What if individual therapy is outside my current budget?
We totally understand these prices may be outside your budget, so we try to offer a range of groups to better support your journey. These groups are ongoing, with open enrollment and you will have a chance to speak with Emery and the group therapist before joining. Groups are either every week or every other week. There are several options from smaller group therapy (6-8 people @ $60/meeting) to support groups (12-15 people @ $45/meeting) or even open studios (unlimited @ $25/meeting). For ongoing groups, you pay each week there is a meeting to hold your space, regardless of attendance, and can stop any time you would like by letting the therapist or Emery know. For groups with a set number of meetings, you can pay for the group upfront or choose to pay over time with a payment plan.

With our ongoing groups, some people are there for a few weeks while others stay in a group a few months or years. It's really up to you based on how you are feeling about your needs and the group support. There is no long term commitment and we just ask that, when possible, you let the group leader know at least 1-2 groups in advance if you are leaving the group so you and the group members have time to end and transition. It's not mandatory, but endings are a very important part of therapy and we would like to support you through the transition.

What can I expect in a Creative Arts Therapy session?
Each therapist is a bit different, but will always listen to your thoughts, concerns, and comfort level when it comes to creative or contemplative approaches to your time in therapy. There will be space for more traditional talk therapy and then time for creative exploration that can take many forms (art making, movement, meditation, etc.) depending on the therapist you have. No experience is necessary! During your initial phone call, Emery will share more about what we offer and will ask about your interests to help you decide who might be the best fit.

No experience with any of these approaches is needed! Staying open to exploring with curiosity is the best way to start with your therapist and each professional will take into account your comfort level when suggesting ways to integrate these approached into your sessions.

(Visual) Art Therapy -
In Art Therapy, art materials, the process of creating art, and the art that is created can all support a clients journey. The goal is to use the art to gain insight into the deep and complex experiences we have as humans. Often words can't fully explain how we are feeling and what we are going through, so the art can support the client and therapist in expressing and exploring what is coming up in therapy. No experience is necessary and "good" art is not at all the focus!

Drama Therapy
This approach to therapy creates a space for people to tell their stories, set goals and solve problems, express feelings, or achieve catharsis. Drama therapy uses role playing, storytelling, metaphor, empathy, distancing, witnessing, performance, and improvisation (just to name a few) to help people make meaningful change. You do not have to be “good” at acting to benefit from it and your therapist is open to talking about what you feel more or less open to using in your therapy journey.

Dance/Movement Therapy
Dance/Movement therapy is a holistic approach to healing. A key belief, that is supported by research, is how changes in the body reflect changes in the mind and vice versa. To really understand, it is helpful to experience it, as it is an embodied practice. Movement, stillness, embodiment, or related explorations will be brought into therapy to connect to and process what someone brings to therapy in a way that is supported and takes the client's comfort level into account.
